The Risk Factor


I like to refer to the fear of being caught as the "risk factor".

The reason I call it that is because every employee who has ever considered stealing from your company, has considered the "risks" that are associated with their intended actions.

Before they steal, they always ask themselves such questions as:

  • Will I be caught?
  • What will happen to me if I am?
  • Could I go to jail?
  • Will I lose my job?

All of the above questions represent real and legitimate "risks" to any employee who is thinking about or planning to steal. These "risks" are then weighed against their potential "reward" and a determination is made as to whether or not it is "safe" to steal.

I refer to this as the "risk vs. reward" factor and it applies to virtually any employee who is thinking about stealing from his employer.

If an employee perceives the "risk" of stealing as being greater than the "reward" - that employee, in all likelihood, will not steal. The reason is because, in his mind, the "reward" does not justify the "risk" involved.

In other words, would you attempt to steal $10 if the penalty was life imprisonment? Certainly not! The reason is because the "risk" far exceeds the "reward".

On the other hand, if an employee perceives the "reward" as being greater than the inherent "risks" - look out!

Because if an employee believes there is little chance of being caught and even less chance of going to jail, he or she will likely take whatever they want - whenever they want!
