The Cop in the Road
Story
If someone told you that
virtually any type of employee theft problem could be
stopped in just minutes - would you believe it?
Probably
not!
The truth is, though, employee
theft can be stopped very quickly IF someone
understands exactly what it is that causes employees to
stop stealing.
To business owners and
managers who have struggled with this very costly issue,
this entire concept of quickly putting an end to their
theft problem may seem a bit far-fetched. But believe
me, it’s really not!
Let me give you an
analogy of how theft can be stopped using a theory I
refer to as "The Cop in the Road Story". It's a great
analogy that accurately reflects how quickly someone
will stop doing something wrong if the proper influence
exists.
Let’s say you
were in a hurry and were traveling 25 mph over the
posted speed limit down a major highway. Because you
were late to a very important meeting, it's safe to
assume that you would likely continue to speed. But is
there anything that would cause you to slow
down?
What if you saw a
patrolman sitting in the median? Would you slow down?
Probably so!
But why did you slow
down?
The reason is because
you didn’t want to get caught - that’s why! You didn’t
want a speeding ticket and you didn't want to pay a
fine.
The important point to
understand here is that the very same thing happens with
employee theft. If you learn how to put “a cop in the
road” in your business - your employees will stop
stealing because they don’t want to get caught
either.
Now ask yourself just
one more question. How long did it take for you to slow
down after you saw the officer sitting in the
median?
Pretty quick,
wasn’t it?
Well, just remember that
employees will stop stealing equally as quick once they
see your “cop in the road”.
Find out how you
can stop theft in your business by putting a “cop in the
road”.
